Steve Greig is an animal hero. When his dog passed away and he was consumed with grief, he decided to adopt a new pet to make himself feel better.
While at the rescue center, Greig made an unusual ask of the staff. He knew that he wanted to adopt another dog. But, he asked the staff to give him a dog that no one else wanted to adopt.
The shelter gave him Eeyore, a 12-year-old Chihuahua with health problems, including bad knees and a heart murmur. Eeyore was just the first of many animals to benefit from Greig’s kindness. He soon went back to the shelter and told them the same request, “give me a dog that no one else wants.”

Eventually, Steve ended up giving 13 animals a home. He calls his senior dogs “wiser animals.” While this many animals might seem like a lot, Greig’s childhood was full of animals. “I grew up with a lot of pets,” Greig said. “Both my parents were animal lovers and they pretty much always let me have whatever I wanted as long as I could take care of it.”

He said of his older dogs, “You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age. These dogs know who they are and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are.”
