Petition: Ask Trader Joe’s to Stop Selling Products With Palm Oil!

Palm oil is found in so many products from cosmetics to snacks. But the way that it’s produced and the demand for it is causing mass deforestation. Every year, 50,000 square miles of tropical forests are cleared for the production of palm oil. Animals are greatly affected by deforestation as it literally wipes out their habitat. Orangutans have lost 55 percent of their habitat in the last 20 years.

A heartbreaking video filmed in 2013 by International Animal Rescue shows an orangutan they were trying to rescue attempting to stop a bulldozer from destroying his home all by himself.

The orangutan in the devastating video, “is frantically seeking refuge from the destructive power of the bulldozer; a machine that has already decimated everything else around him,” says International Animal Rescue. The Bornean orangutan population has decreased by more than 50 percent in the last 60 years, according to World Wildlife Fund.

The amount of forests cleared each year for palm oil are equal to 48 football fields a minute. That is disastrous. Orangutans are suffering. Other animals are suffering. Our planet is suffering.

We need to start demanding change. This petition asks Trader Joe’s, as a food leader, to take a stand. They are a progressive grocery chain that have made positive changes in the past like when they listened to consumers and set a plan to reduce their plastic packaging.

If they took a stand against palm oil, many other grocers can be inspired to do the same. Many food companies will then have incentive to find other ingredients and not source palm oil any longer. If you want to protect orangutans’ natural habitat, sign this petition urging Trader Joe’s to no longer sell products with palm oil!
