One month ago, Buzzfeed News exposed the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for having connections to the trophy hunting industry. The IUCN is possibly the most important agency charged with protecting the world’s animal species. Ties to trophy hunting from such an important organization is worrisome for those truly concerned with the conservation of animal species, especially with the sixth mass extinction under way.
Buzzfeed News found that the NGO of the IUCN chair of the expert group on giraffes and okapis discloses donations from the Dallas Safari Club, the largest hunting association in the world. This wasn’t the only revelation though. Members of the IUCN were against Chanel’s ban on the use of exotic skins. The report also explained IUCN members’ connections to trophy hunting, lobbying by trophy hunters to the organization, and trophy hunting proponents on the IUCN Council.
As this petition states, “How can an organization help save an animal if they work with, or even get funds from sponsors that promote hunting them?” Sign this petition to tell the International Union for Conservation of Nature to do what it was created to do: conserve nature and to purge all members that profit from trophy hunting.
