In modern times, “development” and “progress” for humans often is detrimental to the local ecosystem. As more land is cleared for expanding cities and roads, animals have less room to roam around as well as find food and mates. This can often lead to human-wildlife conflict. When it comes to roadways, this conflict can be especially dangerous for the animals.

Every year, millions of animals are hit by cars. If they aren’t killed upon impact, these animals are unlikely to survive in the wild and suffer slow, painful deaths. Many streets have been built right through the habitat of wild animals. As a result, they are forced to attempt to cross busy roads to carry on with their natural behaviors. Fortunately, there is a solution: wildlife crossings.

All over the world, there are over and underground passes across busy roadways so animals can safely travel to the other side. They benefit animals such as alligators in Florida, tigers in India, and sloths in Costa Rica! While they have been very successful in reducing the number of collisions, there are still so many places in need of similar infrastructure.
