About 9,000 dogs are killed every minute in shelters across the United States. The problem is usually overcrowding due to lack of space in animal shelters. Sadly, one of the methods used for euthanasia is gas chambers which is not pain-free and stress-free. This euthanasia method is still legal in four states, but it should be outlawed everywhere.

Animal welfare experts condemn this method and agree that if euthanasia is absolutely necessary, injection is the only fast and minimally traumatic method. The HSUS says, “Often the animals euthanized in shelters are old, young, ill or injured and none of these animals can be humanely euthanized in a gas chamber. Old, ill, injured or otherwise circulatory compromised animals may suffer from medical conditions that delay the effects of gas, causing them to experience distress prior to unconsciousness.”

The states that still allow gas chambers are Utah, Missouri, Ohio and Wyoming. Not only is euthanasia by gas chamber cruel and inhumane, but it’s actually more expensive than euthanasia by injection.

If you agree that gas chambers should be banned and illegal in all states, sign this petition that asks Congress to place a national ban on gas chambers in animal shelters.
