Puppy mills are terrible places where puppies are kept in wire cages that are caked with their own feces. The animals suffer from a variety of health issues, which lead to premature death, and mother dogs who can no longer be bred are killed in a variety of cruel ways. Because the parents are only used to breed and are not sold, they are treated even worse.

Recently, in the UK, a woman named Kristy Horton found an illegal puppy farm in her town. After seeing a wounded dog and hearing barking coming from the inside of a suspicious container, she called the police. What they found inside was a nightmare.

The dogs were emaciated and kept in the dark in tiny cages where they could barely move. Their fur was matted with feces and blood and the female dog was “spent” from being forced to give birth so many times. They were terrified by the humans that came to rescue them. Fortunately, the police and RSPCA were able to remove the five dogs so that they could get medical treatment and find loving homes.

Horton described the scene as “probably the worst thing [she’s] ever seen” and stated, “I’m finding it really difficult to carry on with regular life knowing that was happening so close to me and also that it’s happening all over the country.”

The Bedfordshire Police are asking for anyone with information to contact them through their website. But for animal lovers and protectors all over the world, there is still something we can do.
