While bloodsports like dogfighting and cockfighting have been banned nationwide, many wildlife species, including bobcats, coyotes, crows, foxes, marmots, mountain lions, prairie dogs, rabbits, and raccoons are still in danger. Barbaric “Killing contests” are still taking place every year, and they are nothing but heartbreaking and disturbing. They are essentially competitions to see which hunter is the most effective at spilling blood and killing the largest number of animals possible. In Virginia, a particular event called the Eastern U.S. Predator Calling Championship takes this horrific concept and makes it even more gruesome.
According to several undercover investigations by the Humane Society of the United States, this Championship contest awards teams prizes for killing the smallest, heaviest, or most number of animals in any given species category. Those prizes include trophies, belt buckles, and even $25,600 for “winners.” Many times, these innocent wildlife animals were gunned down with AR-15s. At the end of the killing spree, trucks that were filled with dead and rotting animals are lined up to present their killings.

Wildlife killing contests are not a tool for managing wildlife and are even counterproductive to such goals, said The Humane Society. It is a misconception that predator-killing contests provide benefits to the public and other wildlife species. They can contribute to instability and social chaos in the family structures of the animals who are killed said Project Coyote. Sign the petition to demand Virginia state legislators re-introduce and pass House Bill 1247 to ban these sadistic mass-killing “games.”
