NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is planning to give over 30,000 non-native ring-necked pheasants to the public to raise and then release through the hunting season as hunters of all ages wait at release sites. Although canned hunts are advertised as outdoor adventures, they take place in luxurious hunting lodges, where people are given high-powered rifles. The area is usually a fenced enclosure and there is no way for these animals to escape, and have no place to hide, says Michigan State.
In the pheasant “recreational” slaughter program, youth and teens are encouraged to begin a career killing birds/wildlife, while hunters litter the forests and fields with lead pellets that are ingested by non-target wildlife, says Care 2.

Exposure to “trophy” and canned hunts is proven to increase the incidence of violence and anti-social behavior in youth and hunting families, desensitizing them to the suffering of others while most of society is working to reduce violence! Not to mention that releasing thousands of non-native birds depletes natural resources for native wildlife are both serious violations of the DEC’s directives and regulations.
