Many people who adopt animals view them as family and would do anything to protect them from harm. Sadly, there are also many people who view animals as accessories rather than beings that live, breathe, and feel things. This leads people to put the appearance of their pet before the needs of that pet, which can lead to unnecessary pain, suffering, and discomfort.

In 2017, Ukrainian fitness model, Elena Ivanickaya, got her pet Sphynx cat tattooed to make her cat as “glamorous” as her. Followers, Animal rights groups, and concerned individuals spoke out against Ivanickaya’s action, calling it “torture.”

The model defended her decision to tattoo her cat, who was apparently anesthetized, claiming that he did not feel pain and has a great life. She explained, “I checked with the vet before getting him a tattoo and they were fine with it and a vet was present while they were doing the tattoo, so everything was under control.” She also told her critics, “The cat’s life is better than yours. Maybe it is hell for you, but he feels just fine.”

Despite public outrage, the model still has her Instagram account and an account for her cat. She continues to post photos of her cat, with the large Anubis tattoo featured on his chest. These photos have the potential to normalize her actions and even encourage others to do the same to their pets. Aesthetics should never be prioritized over an animal’s well-being and comfort. Furthermore, animals cannot consent to these unnecessary alterations to their natural states. Sign this petition to demand Instagram deletes both this influencer’s account and her cat Yasha’s account.
