Recently, France has made headlines for taking important steps to protect animals. But the French Parliament has done nothing to stop bullfighting, and neither have the courts. In fact, when the Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) brought a recent court case, the court in Nimes threw out the case and fined the organization for legal costs.
People kill nearly 250,000 bulls each year in bullfights, and approximately 1,000 in France alone. The numbers, of course, do not do justice to the cruelty involved in these deaths. The bulls are starved, beaten, branded, disoriented with drugs, blinded with vaseline, and suffocated with cotton balls stuffed into their nostrils before the fights even begin. Men on horseback pierce the bull’s neck with a barbed lance, and then the bullfighter stabs the bull with wooden sticks, followed by a sword.
There’s no excuse for tormenting and killing so many animals for human entertainment. Sign this petition against bullfighting, and tell the French Parliament to adopt a consistent stance on animal cruelty.
