Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.

Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Pass Stricter Regulations for Live Animal Transport of Chickens, Ban Police Officers’ Use of Attack Dogs, and Send Captive Elephants to a Sanctuary.

1. Pass Stricter Regulations for Chicken Live Transports

Live animal exports are incredibly dangerous and result in so many of the animals getting sick and dying before the destination is even reached. The UK is attempting to ban them throughout England and Wales, however, live poultry exports aren’t included even though millions of chickens die on transport trucks every year. They are shoved into tiny, dirty plastic trays, stacked high on the backs of trucks. They are kept in these trucks without food and water or any temperature regulation for up to 12 hours. Factory farms would rather one million chickens die of heatstroke, cold stress, dehydration, or physical trauma than pay for trucks that are able to regulate temperatures, cut down on travel time, or provide food and water. Thus, it’s vital that the government enforce stricter regulations until these animals are included in the complete ban of live animal exports. Sign this petition to demand that the UK’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) pass new, stricter regulations for the transport of live chickens!

2. Give Gray Wolves Federal Protection Again

Wolves are apex predators, meaning they’re are vital to maintaining the balance of various ecosystems. Sadly, the first hunting season since Trump delisted them from the Endangered Species Act was devastating to their population. Hunters in Wisconsin had been given permission to kill 119 wolves; any more and their vulnerable population couldn’t take it. Yet, in just three days, they slaughtered 182 wolves, or 15% of the entire wolf population in the area and 50% over their quota. It’s obvious that wolves need more protection against hunters in order for their population to fully recover. Sign this petition to demand wolf protections are put in place again at the federal level!

3. Ban Police Officers’ Use of Attack Dogs

On average, a police officer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana forces their K-9 to attack people – almost always an unarmed black individual who posed no threat. Some of these individuals are even under the age of thirteen. These bites can cause infection, leave scars, damage muscle, and be extremely painful. No dog should ever be trained to behave like this against people. It’s time for lawmakers in the larger state of Louisiana to step in and end this racist and violent practice. Sign this petition to tell Louisiana lawmakers to ban the use of attack dogs on police forces, and stop the cruelty now!

4. Ensure Safe Access to Abortion for All

Abortion is essential, time-sensitive health care, and no one should have to risk needless exposure to a deadly virus to access it. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to reinstate a dangerous requirement that patients travel in person to pick up mifepristone – a safe and effective medication used for early abortion and miscarriage treatment. This decision is especially harmful during the pandemic, as individuals must now leave their homes and risk exposure to get vital care. It also makes access to these abortions extremely difficult for lower-income people who cannot take off work to go to the doctor and/or live far from a clinic. Sign this petition to demand that the Biden Administration ensure safe access to abortion today.

5. Let Rohingya Refugees Stay in India

The Rohingya people are an ethnic minority in Myanmar and as result, they have been denied citizenship, treated as illegal immigrants, and since 2016 have been systematically murdered, detained, or forced to flee from military-controlled Myanmar. Sadly, at the overcrowded and unsanitary refugee camps in Bangladesh, they have limited access to food, clean water, safe shelter, education, and other basic human rights. Thus, 90 Rohingya refugees left Bangladesh on February 11, 2021, desperate to cross the Andaman sea to safety. Sadly, their engines failed, and they were stranded for weeks without food, water, or medical care. 8 people died, and one is still missing. The Indian coast guard rescued the survivors, but after fixing the boat and providing medical attention, they are planning on sending these refugees back to Rohingya. Sign this petition to demand that India take in the surviving refugees, which include 13 children, at once!

6. Take Dog Away From Known Animal Abuser

Zac Brooks was caught on camera kicking, dragging, and abusing his dog. He even threw heavy objects like blocks of wood at the pup and left him outside in the garage in freezing cold weather without any food or water at all! This is not the first instance of abuse, The neighbor who took the video said he did so because he already witnessed Brooks abuse the dog countless times. Unfortunately, while Brooks received a misdemeanor animal neglect charge, he is still getting to keep his dog. It’s obvious that this man should not be allowed to own any animals. Sign this petition to demand that Iowa strengthens its animal protection laws, remove the dog from Zac Brooks’ custody, and make sure he can never own an animal again.

7.  Find Emotional Support Dog of Cancer Patient

On the night of February 18, a black lab named Purdey was stolen from her owner’s home. Purdey is an emotional Support animal or her owner who has been undergoing cancer treatments. While it’s a natural impulse to want to punish someone, it isn’t always the most effective method. It can also deter people from returning what or whom they stole. Offering a reward and the option for understanding, forgiveness, and less punitive action will encourage whoever stole Purdey, or someone who knows of her whereabouts, to return the sweet pup more swiftly and safely. Sign this petition and tell the Leicestershire Police to focus on bringing Purdey back home where she belongs in the most effective and safe way possible!

8. Support the For The People Act

Voter suppression is one of the clearest examples of widespread institutionalized racism in this country. It also directly affects students, the elderly, and low-income individuals. Fortunately, people and organizations are fighting to ensure that voting is accessible for everyone. The For The People Act of 2021 would upgrade election accessibility, transparency, and security by creating a national voter registration program, making Election Day a national holiday, limiting foreign lobbying, requiring SuperPACS to disclose donors, and crushing gerrymandering and voter roll purges. Sign this petition to Support and encourage the Senate to pass S.1: For The People Act of 2021!

9. Reintroduce Mask Mandate in Texas

Recently, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas announced that all businesses in the state are allowed to go back to “business as usual,” including indoor operations. He also lifted the mask mandate. This is not the time to take these risks. We need to continue practicing evidence-based, life-saving practices such as physical distancing and masking up in order to beat COVID. Sign this petition to oppose Governor Abbott’s changes. Keep Texas safe and bring back the masks!

Ontario’s African Lion Safari has shamefully earned the number one spot on the Worst Zoo For Elephants in North America list. Now they want to sell two female elephants, 15-year old Emily and 8-year old Nellie, to the second-worst zoo on the list, Fort Worth Zoo in Texas, for two million dollars. This is a common, yet exploitative and cruel practice, that zoos use to gain more customers. Animal rights groups say this high price encourages the capture and trafficking of elephants around the world. It also is extremely traumatizing for elephants to be separated from their herds, especially if they are being moved to an en environment that is just as cruel and unnatural. Stand up for captive elephants in zoos! Sign this petition to demand they are all sent to an accredited sanctuary for life!
