Recently, a surveillance video was released showing a woman throwing a bag in a dumpster which turned out to have seven 3-day-old puppies in Coachella, California. Fortunately, a man rummaging the garbage found the puppies just an hour later. It was sweltering hot at 90 degrees and the bag was sealed. If the kind gentleman who found them didn’t help, they surely would not have survived.
Chris Mayer of Riverside County Animal Service said, “There is no excuse for dumping puppies. Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. This was a shameful act.” Thankfully, the puppies survived and are being cared for by a Southern California-based rescue organization.
On Monday, the woman responsible for this cruel act was found and arrested. Over 30 dogs were found in her home living in filthy conditions. She also didn’t have a kennel permit according to Riverside County Animal Services chief John Welsh. The woman faces seven years in prison and the 30 dogs are being cared for at Coachella Valley Animal Campus.
We are glad the dogs are all recovering and it’s good that justice is being sought. Animal cruelty is too often not taken seriously enough, but these dogs were fortunate to be saved and the woman will face the consequences of her cruelty. To make sure that other people who harm animals always face consequences, sign this petition demanding that animal cruelty be made a federal felony.
