Animal activists and concerned citizens are calling for a change in China over the illegal practice of delivering animals in “blind boxes.” The media reported that 160 puppies and kittens had been rescued from a warehouse in Chengdu.

Pets are put in boxes and being disguised as regular deliveries. Local reports found that many pets are harmed in transit. Until animal activists intervened, many boxes were on route to be shipped over 1,000 miles away.

“Reject live animal transportation!” said someone on China’s Weibo service posting under the name Xian-Jie-Po-Lie, Reuters reported. “The stench of corpses produces all sorts of germs that contaminate surrounding parcels… This is clearly an illegal act that is being done for personal monetary gain.”

While mailing pets this way is illegal, activists are calling for a crackdown on the practice.
