Adopting an animal from a shelter is a wonderful opportunity to give a loving home to an animal in need. Whether you adopt a dog, cat, or bunny, it should be a process made with the intent to love and care for the animal. Yet, some people do this thing that is supposed to be amazing with the worst of intentions. Recently, a couple in Russia made the news when they adopted a dog just to eat him that same night. Now, another devastating story has come to light of a man in the United States who adopted dogs just to completely neglect them and cause their death.

David Goodburn adopted “2 Bonded Buddy dogs” from Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Iowa in March. Their names are Nori and Brie. He went through the process and showed no red flags, whatsoever. The organization truly believed the dogs were going to a good home like the other 2,614 pets that have been adopted from ARL since the beginning of the year.

They weren’t alone in this. They shared on Facebook that people who were in the home after the adoption also thought it was going to be a loving home for the dogs. Sadly, this wasn’t the case at all. This week, Nori and Brie were found deceased in his home after he left them alone to fend for themselves since March. They starved to death.

ARL staff are “shocked, heartbroken, and furious,” and feel that the charges are not fitting for the crime. Goodburn has been charged with “2 counts of animal neglect, a serious misdemeanor demonstrating ‘willful intent.'”

However, the ARL is encouraging people to write to Congress urging them to pass HF737, the bill to Improve Iowa’s Companion Animal Cruelty Laws. They have prepared a message that you can sign and send to a State Representative.

Send the message to stand up against all animal cruelty, and especially in honor of Nori and Brie who deserved so much better.
