Many countries are enforcing strict lockdown rules as we fight off COVID-19. Lockdown rules include banning mass gatherings, travel restrictions, and more. But in Australia, racing (both greyhound and horse racing, which are cruel industries, to begin with) still continues despite the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the world.

Recently, some drivers and trainers were tested for COVID-19 and when the results came back negative, Harness Racing Victoria announced it would resume racing. A jockey is even still racing after having traveled with a person who tested positive for the virus. His test returned negative, but everyone is pretty aware by now that you don’t need to have it yourself or show symptoms to infect others.

They say the racing will continue to “operate under strict biosecurity protocols,” and they will stop when told to by health officials. However, horse racing already is an industry that puts the health and lives of animals at risk and treats them like commodities. Horses are constantly euthanized the moment there is an injury on the track… which happens all the time. And when they are no longer of use to the industry, they are sent to be slaughtered.

Now, in this same industry, not only will the animals continue to be exploited, but people’s lives and health are being put in danger. Recently, actor Alex Baldwin asked Mayor DeBlasio to end horse carriage rides in New York City due to the public health crisis. The same should be done in Australia with horse racing.
