The Daily Mail has reported on horrifying footage of dogs being sold in a food market on a tourist’s visit to Vietnam. Photos and videos show small dogs sold in Hanoi at outdoor markets. Josh Edelson, a tourist traveling the country, was able to capture film and video of the horrors.

The government of Vietnam has been working to remove and reduce the practice of selling dog meat for food. California resident Edelson told the Daily Mail about what he saw, “The photos are extremely disturbing, but I think it’s an important story, especially because the Vietnamese government is at odds with the locals. The first time I tried, they shooed me away. They don’t like having photos taken, prob because it’s a pretty controversial part of their culture – eating dog. The locals contend that it is part of their culture and that it should remain.”

Edelson said he even saw soldiers purchase and snack on the meat. He assumed they would be monitoring the situation or even shutting down the stand.

According to the Daily Mail, the government is looking to stop the practice by 2021. Most dogs used in Vietnam for food used to be taken from Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Animal rights groups have been working to stop the practice across Asia due to concerns over public health and animal cruelty. Read more about animal rights campaigns against dog meat.
