A couple rescued a dog they found in Joshua Tree in early October. The hikers found the dog alone in the hot weather. Local Zoe Cadman was going from Monrovia to meet friends for a hike when she saw a dog along the highway.
“We were almost to the hiking spot in Palm Desert when we saw what we thought was maybe a bobcat going across the street. So we slowed down and were like ‘Oh my God, it’s a dog,“ Cadman said. They finally caught up to the dog, who they nicknamed Dave.
Cadman explained the situation, “It was out in the middle of nowhere and he was just running, and running down the middle of the road. We poured some water into a coffee cup and he came right over,” she said.
Thinking quickly, Cadman brought the dog to a place called the Shabby Dog, close to Sierra Madre. “When we saw him he was a mess,” said Shabby Dog owner Sandy Duvall. “Very dehydrated, mats foxtails all over him. In fact, we are treating his feet and nose for sunburn.”

He’s chipped but not registered to an owner. After visiting a vet, Dave received a haircut and shots. The veterinarian believes he’s about 5 years old. And now Dave is looking for a new home! “I honestly firmly believed he was dumped,” said Cadman. “I think Dave deserves a good home where he can go explore with his favorite person.” If you’re interested in adopting Dave, email info@theshabbydog.com with the subject line “Dave.”
