Aaron Kinsel was on his usual waste and recycling truck route when he spotted something unexpected, a dog. His route outside Cincinnati led him past a discarded backpack with a 10-week old puppy inside, according to a press release from his employer, Rumpke.

Rumpke called Kinsel a “hero,” after he saved the dog. The female puppy is a boxer mix and was checked by a veterinarian. Kinsel and his family then decided to adopt her. Tipper, as she’s now called, is safe at last and is healing from a broken leg and dehydration.

“For their safety, as well as for the safety of our customers, Rumpke drivers are trained to remain observant. We do our best to take care of our communities and always do the right thing,” said Kendra Catherman Cincinnati safety manager at Rumpke. “We are very proud of Aaron and delighted to make Tipper an honorary member of our Rumpke team.”

Tipper is named for the mechanism used on the back of trucks that helps pick up containers. “I felt like I was meant to find her,” Kinsel said.
