The first-ever whale sanctuary in North America is coming to Nova Scotia in 2023. The sanctuary was decided upon after Canada passed the Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act. This act prevents all whale and dolphin species from being held in captivity, especially for entertainment purposes.
Whales are social creatures that spend their entire life swimming around the world’s oceans. They do not do well in confined spaces and are very negatively impacted by captivity of any kind.
This whale sanctuary will seek funding to create a sanctuary that is large enough to home several whales, giving them plenty of space to roam and swim in safety.
The Whale Sanctuary Project said in a press release, “The 110 acres that will be the whales’ home need to be in an environment that’s interesting, varied and enriching, safe and healthy both for them and for all the other living creatures who inhabit the bay. For example, it should be deep in some places and shallow in others with a sandy seafloor in some parts and a variable seafloor in others – rich in plant and animal life and basically a place the whales can truly call home.”
The sanctuary would take in whales that have been held in captivity or are otherwise unable to return to the wild, providing a safe place for them to live out the rest of their lives in as natural a way as possible.
