An Australian family who evacuated their homes in the bushfires thought they had lost everything, including pets. But one of the cats, Angel, came back a week later.

Families across the country have been forced to evacuate their homes. When Ben Symonds and his family evacuated their property, their cats ran off into the bushland. Symonds posted on Reddit, “We had to leave them when the fire descended whilst we were packing to evacuate.”

Of the fires, Symonds said, “Fire consumed most of our property. Every inch of our property is black, only the grass around the house survived.” The Symonds family spotted Angel in a burned gully near their house. Symonds posted on Reddit, “Our cat came home after missing in the fires for 7 nights. She’s burnt but should live. We thought her lost when the fire consumed most of our property. Best feeling ever to walk out and see her alive.”

Angel is an indoor cat, but still managed to stay alive in the wilderness. Her ears are singed and she’s a little burnt in other places, but she is doing well. Symonds said, “She seems pretty stoked and loving the attention.” Their other cat Mickey is still missing. Here’s hoping for Mickey’s safe return as well.

Fires have been ravaging Australia the past few weeks, destroying thousands of acres of animal habitat and people’s homes.
