Madison Square Garden is partnering with the Cowboy Channel to host a three-day competition featuring bull riding and calf roping in June 2020. The event will be called “Rodeo New York.” But in this day and age, when people are coming to the realization that these events are cruel, why is Madison Square Garden bringing back such a cruel event after 30 years of not hosting these kinds of events? Fortunately, assembly member Linda Rosenthal hopes to stop it in its tracks!
Rosenthal says: “It is shocking that MSG would host this brutality. It is deeply disturbing that a private company which receives a multi-million-dollar property tax abatement each year — $42 million last year alone — is hosting an event that violates the spirit of our State’s animal cruelty laws.” She also added: “Rodeos are modern day gladiator games – blood sport masquerading as entertainment. Make no mistake about it: Bull riding and other rodeo events are not family-friendly entertainment.”
We agree completely. Calf roping involves “calves as young as three months old are chased at high speed, dragged to a sudden stop with a choking rope around the neck and thrown to the ground. This is a horrific experience causing stress, fear and pain.” The Animal Legal Defense Fund explains that “The horses, bulls, steer, and calves suffer broken ribs, backs, and legs, torn tails, punctured lungs, internal organ damage, ripped tendons, torn ligaments, snapped necks, and agonizing deaths.”
Just recently, handlers were caught on video cruelly electro-shocking horses at rodeo events. Rodeos are just an event where the abuse and torture of animals is glorified and rewarded. It needs to end.
