Boston University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and Harvard’s Wyss Institute have teamed up to remove animals from a human wound healing process. In many cases, wound healing treatments are tested on animals, but this new research could remove them from the process.
This process mixes two types of human cells connected with wound healing, fibroblasts and endothelial cells, into a gel made up of collagen and fibrin. With this new method, animals aren’t necessary.
According to Citizens for Alternatives to Animal Research (CAARE), animals are traditionally used to study wound healing and treatments. Mice, rats, sheep, pigs, and dogs have been used in the past in expensive, painful procedures. In these procedures, a hole is punched in the skin, sometimes the ear. Complications can arise in animal testing, including malnutrition, infection, pain, and death.
According to (CAARE), this model successfully shows how tissue engineering and biomedical advances can study wound healing mechanisms without the need for animals.

Animal testing is a useless and unethical part of scientific research, the testing is found to be ineffective, as 95% of drugs that pass animal tests fail on humans. Numerous companies are standing up against animal testing and recently the USDA made a decision to eliminate some mammalian testing by 2025 but there’s more to be done and it’s time countries ban animal experimentation altogether as it hurts humans as well.

Great news, and further proof that cutting-edge science does not involve exploiting animals.
