A veteran in Alabama says it was a “miracle” after his support dog survived after being attacked with an arrow that impaled his side.

Disabled veteran, Billy Morris, has a very special bond with his four-year-old Great Pyrenees named Cotton. “He’s real special to me. He helps calm me,” he told WVTM.

Morris was walking with Cotton when he realized he was walking slowly and decided to make sure he was ok. That’s when he noticed an arrow was stuck inside the poor pup’s side.

“He was hardly breathing. He actually laid down at my feet and in that moment, I knew he was in serious trouble,” Morris told WVTM.

Morrison sprung into action and rushed Cotton to the local veterinarian.

“I was afraid I was going to lose my dog. I actually had to start breathing mouth to muzzle on the way to the veterinary clinic,” Morrison told WVTM.

According to Morris, Cotton suffered from two collapsed lungs, but the veterinarian clinic was able to help him, and he’s on the road to recovery now.

“It’s a miracle. It narrowly missed his heart, didn’t hit any major arteries or major veins,” he told WVTM.

Morris believes that someone did this to Cotton on purpose. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating the incident.

Morrison told WVTM how important Cotton is to him and how important emotional support and service animals are.

“That’s what a lot of people don’t realize about service dogs, or about these support animals, sometimes, as a veteran, as someone who has experienced trauma on multiple occasions, it’s not like we wish to turn to another individual to talk about our problems.”

“It’s much easier for us to find comfort in an animal,” Morris noted.

Emotional support animals are often overlooked and not taken seriously. However, they can truly provide relief to individuals that have a psychiatric disability and be a great constant companion for people. We are so happy Cotton is on the road to recovery and hope that the person who did this will face charges.
