When Friendly Fields Farm, an animal sanctuary and nonprofit, received an emergency call about four pot-bellied pigs that needed to be rescued, they did not hesitate. Little did they know that two of the pigs were pregnant and could give birth to twelve piglets each!

Elliot and his three sisters were rescued from a terrible neglect situation. “They were living in their own filth, with no shelter or clean water. I don’t think they had ever been touched or interacted with in any way. When we rescued them and brought them to the sanctuary, they were terrified of people,” said Friendly Fields Farm.

Over the past few months, the sanctuary has been working patiently to slowly build their trust.

At the vet checkup, the animal sanctuary later found out that the two pregnant pot-belly pigs were impregnated by their father, making the piglets inbred with a higher chance of congenital disabilities and death. The vet also warned the sanctuary that since the mothers are only 6 months old, they will most likely need emergency c-sections would take place in the sanctuary’s basement or garage.

“This rescue has been one of the hardest things I have ever done. I love these pigs so much, It’s hard to put into words. Watching them go through complicated pregnancies at only six months old was incredibly hard,” said Friendly Fields Farm.

Tragically, only one piglet survived the complicated and high-risk pregnancies. After being there for Pearl, as she mourned the loss of her piglets, the sanctuary was more determined than ever to give these sweet pigs the best life possible. They also stressed the importance of spaying and neutering pigs and other animals to prevent a horrible situation like this from happening again.

“To me, this is what sanctuary is about. Providing a place for animals that have endured terrible conditions to finally feel safe and loved. To help heal their wounds, physically and mentally. I’m so grateful to do this work, and to be able to share special moments like this with all of you,” said Friendly Fields Farm.

Friendly Fields Farm is a nonprofit farm animal sanctuary in Waynesville North Carolina home to more than 100 animals rescued from situations of slaughter, neglect, and abuse. They rely on donations to keep their operation going and save animal lives.
