During a TNR project, this rescue discovered a very pregnant and feral cat wandering around outside all on her own and decided to help!

When feral, pregnant cats are found, sadly, it’s common for the mother to be spayed and the babies to be aborted. However, this rescue just couldn’t fathom the idea of going through with this difficult decision, especially since she was so far along in her pregnancy. So instead, they brought her home!

“My goal is to provide her with a safe space to deliver her babies and find them forever homes,” said the rescue.

It took some time and patience for this mama cat to trust her rescuers after all the stress she was put through, but after only one week, she started to come around.

And before they knew it, she gave birth to four beautiful and healthy babies: Penguin, Kiwi, Goose, and Duck.

“Watching her journey as a mama to four precious babies has been such a privilege. I am constantly in awe of the patience and love she has for them,” said the rescue.

“TNR” stands for “Trap, Neuter, Release,” and it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s the process of humanely trapping feral cats, neutering (or spaying) them, and then releasing them back into their colonies where they were originally trapped.

Each year, more than 2.7 million animals are euthanized in shelters every year in the United States because they are not adopted into loving homes. Throughout their lifetimes, an unaltered pair of cats and their offspring can produce hundreds of thousands of cats. That’s a staggering number. TNR programs can help to control feral cat populations, and ensure that feral kittens don’t end up in shelters as “strays.”

If you know of a feral cat colony that could benefit from a TNR program – or if you’d like to volunteer to help feral cats – you can track down a TNR program by contacting your local animal shelter.
