Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.

Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Prevent Animal Abusers from Working with Animals, Strengthen Animal Welfare Laws in Sri Lanka, and Urge Argentina to Protect the Pink Fairy Armadillo!

We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.

1. Ban Using Dogs to Attack Prisoners

The use of dogs to attack and scare inmates is legal in five states. This process involves training dogs to be so aggressive that they attack, bite, and drag prisoners from their cells. No human being should be subject to this kind of treatment. Furthermore, it’s also wrong to exploit dogs in this way! Dogs that are trained to be this aggressive have a very hard time getting re-homed after they’re done working, so most get euthanized. Sign this petition to ask these Utah, Delaware, Connecticut, South Dakota, and Iowa to ban the practice of using attack dogs on prisoners.

2. Find Kids Who Abused Horse and Get Them the Help They Need

A man in Ireland called animal rescuers after he spotted a distressed pony, named Jenna. When they arrived, they realized that Jenna was covered head to toe in bruises, cuts, and lumps. She received medical attention, but the injuries were too bad and Jenna passed away. Two separate witnesses report that two children were seen treating her roughly while riding her and beating her with a heavy object. There are many reasons why children abuse animals, like being victims of abuse, psychological issues, and so on. What they did is awful, but they need to receive help so that this never happens again. Sign this petition to encourage the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals  (DSPCA) Inspectorate to find these two kids, and assess the situation so that they can receive the help they so desperately need!

3. Tell Insurance Companies to Provide People with Reusable Masks

Single-use masks and gloves are clogging the oceans and killing our wildlife. Masks are extremely important to be wearing right now. They save lives and slow the spread of the virus. However, many people use disposable masks, which are not disposed of properly, and even if they are, the wind carries them into oceans. Already, conservationists and marine biologists across the globe are finding masses of gloves and masks in the ocean, which can harm animals and people. Some people like healthcare workers and those who are immunocompromised need to wear disposable masks. However, reusable ones are work just as well for everyone else. Sign this petition to ask that medical insurance providers in the U.S. to provide reusable masks to those under their coverage.

Officer Jeffrey Neese of Mesa, Arizona Police Department, has dozens of complaints of sexual harassment formally filed against him from both colleagues and citizens. However, the Arizona Police Department has nothing about it. Instead, Neese is being allowed by the department to retire with “honor” and receive a full pension. He even gets to keep his license if he ever wants to serve again. Sign this petition to demand Neese is stripped of his police license and held accountable for years of sexual harassment!

Garry Reynolds ran NorCal K9, a dog training business in East Contra Costa County, California. While in this position, he neglected and abused the dogs under his protection, which resulted in the death of four dogs. He and his partner were charged for animal cruelty and face prison time, however, there is no law keeping Garry from working with dogs again when he gets out of jail. Sign this petition to ask California to pass legislation prohibiting convicted animal abusers from ever having access to animals again!

6. Uphold the Ban on Bee-Killing Pesticides in the EU

Bees have been dying in masses due to colony collapse disorder (CCD), the use of insecticides, habitat destruction, and global warming. In 2013, the European Union (EU) passed a moratorium on neonicotinoids, an insecticide and aggressive bee-killer, however, there needs to be a complete ban. Since the moratorium took, over 200 authorizations for the use of these murderous pesticides were granted. As one scientist put it, the “exception has become the rule.” Without bees around to pollinate plants, so many animals and eventually humans would die. There’s no time to waste! Sign this petition to demand that the EU actually uphold its ban on the use of neonicotinoids!

7.  Ban Elephant Rides and Strengthen Animal Welfare Laws in Sri Lanka

Kanakota was an elephant that was worked to death under the hot Sri Lankan sun. For 18 years he was physically exhausted by working in the tourist industry. Elephants in the industry are taken from their mothers as calves and beaten and prodded until their spirits are crushed. When the elephant is considered docile enough to interact with humans, the training ends but the torture and pain continue until their dying day. Sri Lanka lacks animal welfare laws that could protect elephants and other animals from being used and treated like machines. If one is convicted of animal cruelty, they only have to pay a small fine that is equivalent to 27 cents. Sign this petition to ask Sri Lanka to ban elephant rides and to pass new animal welfare laws that will provides real animal protection.

8. Defund SAISD Police Department

During the 2019-20 school year, SAISD spent $6.4 million on the SAISD police department, and they do not plan on bringing that number down. Campus police reinforce the criminalization of students, escalate situations, and put students in danger, especially those who are Black, Latinx, or undocumented. Having campus police feeds into the school to prison pipeline and there are no statistics proving that they make schools safer on a day-to-day basis or during instances of armed violence. In 2016, one SAISD officer even body-slammed a 12-year-old girl. Sign this petition to urge administrators to defund the SAISD police and invest in counselors, social workers, and restorative justice facilitators instead.

9. Urge Argentina to Protect the Pink Fairy Armadillo

Pink Fairy Armadillos are amazing animals that are endangered due to the destruction of their natural habitat and people’s desire to domesticate them. Chemical bug repellants have left them without access to their major food source, ants. The Pink Fairy Armadillo is also very sensitive and does not cope well with change. When they are forcibly removed from their homes to make room for urban development, they become stressed, and many die. The longest known survival in captivity is 8 days. Sign this petition to implore the Argentinean government to take immediate action by writing comprehensive laws to protect the Pink Fairy Armadillo and their habitat

10. Regulate Animal Abuse and Neglect in Mississippi

This year, the Animal Legal Defense Fund recognized Mississippi as the worst state for Animals in America. They have minimal laws and regulations to protect their non-human animal inhabitants. There aren’t any felony laws for animal neglect or abandonment, veterinarians aren’t required to report abuse, and there is no mandatory forfeiture of animals when an owner is convicted of animal abuse. It’s vital that Mississippi pass these important laws to protect animals from abuse and neglect. Sign this petition to encourage Mississippi to move forward by making animal abandonment and neglect a felony.
