More than 10 stray cats have been shot and killed with an air gun by US forces at Osan Airbase located in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. The base began by euthanizing the cats through a veterinarian but has transitioned to shooting them. This sparked controversy over animal cruelty and caused outrage by many Animal rights advocates.

The horrifying video showed military personnel shooting a cat who was sitting in a cage. According to the domestic animal protection law, killing stray cats with lethal weapons constitutes animal cruelty. Their method of slaughtering was switched to shooting because euthanasia drugs are expensive and can be traumatizing for veterinarians, said The Korea Herald.

“The harmful animal handling team shot the (captive) cat. They didn’t care whether the cat was sick, injured, old, or nursing,” a man who tipped off the incident told KBS.

Sterilizing, vaccinating, and then transitioning these cats into adoption and working cat/barn cat programs is the only humane solution, and this cruel slaughter must be stopped.
