Like many other essential workers, veterinary workers have had to deal with the daily fear of contracting COVID in addition to economic and emotional challenges.
Veterinarians do vital, life-saving work. Without them, the quality and span of life for our furry family members would not be nearly as good or as long. Veterinarians deserve so much respect for the work that they do. Unfortunately, even though veterinarians are classified as essential workers, they are not receiving hazard pay for their work during the pandemic. Bills introduced concerning hazard pay leave out veterinarians from the category of healthcare workers that would (at least at first)qualify for hazard pay. Senate Leader McConnell has said that he also doesn’t expect the upcoming Senate stimulus package to include hazard pay for any essential workers.
Veterinarians deserve to be compensated fairly for the vital work they are doing during this pandemic. Instead, they are being expected to give up future paid time off, which is not only unfair, but can also be detrimental to veterinary workers’ mental health. Thus, veterinary workers are taking a stand. They are asking for hazard pay that is a minimum of 20% of their hourly pay as well as additional paid time off and safety subcommittees to help keep everyone safe according to CDC guidelines. NVA (National Veterinary Associates) is the largest private owner of freestanding veterinary hospitals in the US. Their net worth is hundreds of millions of dollars, but they still aren’t providing veterinary workers with hazard pay during the pandemic. This is completely unjust. Sign this petition to put pressure on NVA to adequately compensate their veterinary staff for the work that they are doing during the pandemic.
