Men who consume more dairy products, especially milk, have a significantly higher risk of prostate cancer, according to a new study.

Research from the Loma Linda University Health found that men who consume about 430 grams of dairy per day or 1 ¾ cups of milk have a 25 percent increased risk of prostate cancer. They faced a large risk with men who consumed less dairy and even greater risk than men with zero dairy intake in their diets.

Researchers found no associations between increased prostate cancer risk and intake of non-dairy calcium, which means that substances other than calcium play a role in the risk of prostate cancer in dairy foods.

“Our findings add important weight to other evidence associating dairy products, rather than non-dairy calcium, as a modifiable risk factor for prostate cancer,” said Gary Fraser, MBChB, Ph.D., the study’s main investigator, and professor. Fraser said that there was not a lot of variation when comparing full fat, reduced, or nonfat milk.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, looked at over 28,000 North American men with different dairy and calcium exposures. All of the men were initially cancer-free, and they evaluated dietary intakes from food frequency questionnaires and repeated 24-hour recalls.

They then looked at cancer state registries to follow up on prostate cancer status for an average time of almost eight years. By the end of the study, there were 1,254 new reported prostate cancer cases.

Fraser said that one reason for the link between dairy milk and prostate cancer is the sex hormone content of dairy milk. Prostate cancer is hormone-responsive cancer.
