Aline, a TikTok user from Chicago, recently shared a touching moment involving her cat, who seemingly paid tribute to two kittens lost at birth. During her Day of the Dead celebration, Aline placed a traditional ofrenda to honor deceased loved ones. To her surprise, her cat left a green sock—her favorite toy—on the ofrenda, leading Aline to tearfully believe the gesture was a tribute to the lost kittens.
While some may see this as a coincidence, research has shown that cats can mourn the loss of companions. A 2024 study in Applied Animal Behavior Science found that cats often exhibit behaviors like seeking extra attention and appearing to search for deceased pets. In Aline’s case, many TikTok viewers felt similarly moved, with one person commenting that animals may have heightened senses, allowing them to “see” those who are gone. The video got nearly 2 million views and 500,000 likes.
