There is so much information out there about how to “be healthier.”  Should you be going on a raw diet?  How about a seasonal detox?  And are you getting enough omega-3 fatty acids, B12, iron, Vitamin D and antioxidants?  All these questions are enough to make anyone’s head spin!

In my work as a health coach, the number one barrier I see my clients face is information overload.  With the internet and media constantly bombarding us with messages about how to be healthy it can make us feel paralyzed.  How can we possibly weed through all of the information and figure out what we need to do in order to take care of ourselves?

Today I am going to simplify it.  Regardless of whether your diet is 100% clean and plant-based or completely the opposite, these three tips are a great starting place for anyone trying to take better care of their health.

1. Drink warm lemon water

Start each morning with a glass of lukewarm lemon water.  This is a wonderful way to wake up your digestive system, flush toxins out, boost your immunity, and balance your pH levels.  Even though lemons are acidic, they actually have an alkalizing effect on the body and help to reduce your body’s overall acidity.  Keeping your body at the proper pH is important because when our bodies are too acidic (which tends to happen living in a modern world full of toxins and processed foods), our bodies become more prone to disease.  Drinking lemon water is also a very hydrating and refreshing alternative to that morning cup of coffee!

There is no exact formula here so simply add a wedge of fresh lemon to a glass of lukewarm water.  You can keep lemon slices fresh for several days in a sealable container in your fridge so it will be easy to grab in the morning.  If possible, choose an organic lemon to avoid any pesticide residue (or peel the lemon if buying conventional).

2. Go for a short walk

We all know that exercise is good for us, but sometimes it can feel like a battle to get it into our daily schedules.  Here is my tip for you:  start each morning with a ten or fifteen minute walk.  Often times we tend to think about exercise as all-or-nothing.  If we can’t get in a full hour of intense activity then forget about it, right?

However, you can still reap all the benefits by breaking it down into shorter spurts.  Aim for a short walk each morning and try to incorporate lunchtime and evening walks into your week as much as possible.  The trick is to start small and make it work for you.

Walking is a wonderful activity that anyone of any fitness level can do.  Make it fun by loading up your iPod with your favorite music, podcasts, or audio books.  You can also walk outdoors and enjoy nature whenever possible to help keep your walks interesting.

3. Eat some greens!

Leafy green vegetables are all the rage right now – and with good reason!  Leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, swiss chard, bok choy, beet greens, collards, or arugula are packed with fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll, and tons of phytochemicals.  Eating greens on a regular basis will help to purify your blood, strengthen your immune system, improve circulation, keep your stomach feeling full, and keep you energized throughout your day.

Greens can be enjoyed a variety of ways, from smoothies to salads to sautéed in a stir-fry.   You’ll be amazed at how quick and easy it is to use greens in the kitchen and what a huge impact they have on the way your body feels.  Some of my favorite recipes include my green smoothie, creamy broccoli and kale soup, kale caesar salad, and sesame roasted greens.

So now that you have three easy ways to get started on your path to better health, how are you going to incorporate these tips into your life?
