Yes! Dwight Schrute From ‘The Office’ Has Gone Vegan!

Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica — and more beets, please.

Actos Rainn Wilson, who is best known for his role as Dwight Schrute on the wildly popular television show The Office, has officially announced that he’s adopted a vegan diet, and has even gone so far as to dub himself: “The Fifty Year Old Vegan.” Yes!

‘So about six weeks ago or so, my wife and I decided to try Veganism for a month,’ he wrote.

“We were so dependent on eating animals and animal products, we just wanted to try it. Give our digestive systems a change-up.

“It was TOUGH,” Rainn admitted. “Especially that first week. I wanted a steak and eggs so bad. I felt tired and cranky and hungry all the time, even with the buckets of quinoa I was shoveling into my mouth. Ugh.”

Personally, we love quinoa, but we understand that rehauling you entire can feel like an overwhelming feat if you’re unfamiliar with the abundant world of plant-based food. We recommend reading this feature on How to Transition to a Vegan Diet Without Giving Up Anything You Love if you’re struggling like Rainn was at first.

Luckily, Rainn and his wife, Holiday, noticed benefits two weeks into their new diet.

“I noticed that I had more energy! I was sleeping better and deeper. I didn’t need naps in the afternoon as much. I started to drop some pounds. And, bonus, it’s supposed to be good for the planet,” he wrote.

That’s true, of course — there’s no more sustainable diet out there than a plant-based diet, and the Environmental Impact of Vegans Versus Meat-Eaters is pretty astonishing: the animal agriculture industry is unsustainable, and if you want more proof, here are 10 Scary Facts About Meat and the Environment.

Resources for the New Plant-Based Eater

If you’re trying to transition into a more plant-based diet, we have the resources to make finding plant-based substitutes for old standbys a cinch. Here’s a guide to vegan meats and substitutes; if you want veggie burgers that won’t fall apart, we have that covered, too. We’ve found hacks to make sure your plant-based meals always burst with flavor, tricks to make meatless food taste meaty, an amazing guide on how to make cheesy sauces out of vegetables, and once you’ve mastered those, you can move on to learning about classic and delicious vegan sauces at large.

Missing cheese? Don’t sweat it. There are so many fantastic plant-based cheeses out there, we almost feel like we don’t have enough time to try and savor them all. These American Cheese Slices are especially familiar and comforting, and once you get the hang of plant-based cheese, you’ll want to play around with more involved recipes, like this gluten-free Cashew Herb Cheese.

We also highly recommend downloading our Food Monster App, which is available for both Android and iPhone, and can also be found on Instagram and Facebook. The app has more than 8,000 plant-based, allergy-friendly recipes, and subscribers gain access to ten new recipes per day. Check it out!
