Having a glass of wine in the evening to wind down after a long day of work is one of life’s simplest, most wonderful pleasures. However, we all know the pain of returning to a bottle of wine we left unfinished the night prior, ready to savor another glass, only to discover that it’s spoilt.
Wine is expensive, but luckily there’s a hack to restore your bottle of wine that went bad, and it costs much less than any bottle of wine will run you — in fact, it’ll cost you only a penny. Literally.
As it turns out, the folks behind the YouTube channel called Reactions discovered that you can restore a bottle of wine that’s taken a turn for the south by literally dropping a penny into a not-so-fresh glass of wine. We definitely suggest making sure that your penny is clean before using this trick (try cleaning your pennies with vinegar!).
Essentially, the copper of your penny will have a chemical reaction with the thiols — aka the sulfur in your wine that gives it that sort of stinky aroma when it begins to go bad — and will produce an odorless compound called copper sulfide, thereby reducing the spoiled scent of the bad wine, and restoring its fresh flavor and mouthfeel.
