Great-Grandma's Sugar Cookies

This recipe has been in my family for generations and I’m so glad to be sharing it with all of you today! I have so many fond memories of walking into my Great-Grandmother’s and my Grandmother’s house during the holidays and having the smell of freshly baked sugar cookies waft through the air. It’s been a while since I’ve had these cookies though since my Great-Grandmother and Grandmother passed away. When I was going through their recipes – trying to figure out what to bake this Holiday season, I knew I had to make these! They’re melt-in-your-mouth amazing! These are pretty delicate cookies, so they aren’t easily made into cut-out sugar cookies. They’re perfectly delicious dropped by the spoonful and doused in red and green sprinkles!

*Makes 2 dozen cookies*

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

Preparation:

  1. In a medium sized bowl cream together the powdered sugar, regular sugar, shortening, vegetable oil, applesauce, and vanilla. In a separate bowl sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, and tartar. Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and blend until just combined.
  2. Drop by the rounded tablespoon onto a greased or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges are golden brown. Remove from the oven and immediately top with the your favorite sprinkles. Cool on a wire wrack for 2-3 minutes before serving.
