This recipe has been in my family for generations and I’m so glad to be sharing it with all of you today! I have so many fond memories of walking into my Great-Grandmother’s and my Grandmother’s house during the holidays and having the smell of freshly baked sugar cookies waft through the air. It’s been a while since I’ve had these cookies though since my Great-Grandmother and Grandmother passed away. When I was going through their recipes – trying to figure out what to bake this Holiday season, I knew I had to make these! They’re melt-in-your-mouth amazing! These are pretty delicate cookies, so they aren’t easily made into cut-out sugar cookies. They’re perfectly delicious dropped by the spoonful and doused in red and green sprinkles!
*Makes 2 dozen cookies*
Ingredients:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup applesauce
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 4 cups all purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cream of tartar
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
Preparation:
- In a medium sized bowl cream together the powdered sugar, regular sugar, shortening, vegetable oil, applesauce, and vanilla. In a separate bowl sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, and tartar. Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and blend until just combined.
- Drop by the rounded tablespoon onto a greased or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges are golden brown. Remove from the oven and immediately top with the your favorite sprinkles. Cool on a wire wrack for 2-3 minutes before serving.
