As plant-based fast food chains and restaurants continue to make waves, a number of popular (and beloved) quick-service dining spots are also rolling out revamped vegan menu items. This year and last, the Beyond Burger made it’s way into a variety of locations, while meat-heavy restaurants ditched their animal-based menus for plant-based ones.
Swedish home furnishing retailer, IKEA, has restaurants in all of its stores. Following the success of their vegan meatballs in 2015, IKEA intends to add a veggie hot dog to their European stores. Now, they finally have a date. It is to be released early next year, in August. They announced on Instagram that they were testing the vegan hot dog in Sweden, as part of an effort to increase plant-based food options.
IKEA has already replaced styrofoam with packaging grown from mushrooms as an effort to be more conscious. According to Press Herald and sales leader Peter Ho, Swedish customers gave the hot dog a 95% approval rating. He said, “We do anticipate that the veggie dog will be offered in the U.S.” He hopes to begin serving the vegan hot dog in U.S. stores no later than early 2019. The new vegan option will come prepared with red cabbage and fried onions on top.
