Guide to Eating Vegan in Boston: Top Restaurants to Visit!

Ah, Boston, the beautiful city in eastern Massachusetts. Boston is filled with art and culture, but did you know that this historical city is also filled with an abundance of restaurants with vegan offerings? Whether you are in Boston for school, are traveling through, or currently reside in the northeastern city, check out these plant-based dishes available throughout the city. We also included some recipes from theFood Monster App that are similar to menu options at these restaurants!

By CHLOE is a 100 percent vegan eatery with two locations in Boston. The menu consists of a variety of delicious options, like Spicy Thai Salad, Avocado Pesto Pasta, Mac n’ Cheese, and so much more! They even sell pupcakes and bag o’dog bones for our fur babies — cute! The menu features locally sourced ingredients, and everything is made in-house daily! If you can’t make it to By CHLOE try out this recipe for Avocado Pesto Pasta With Shiitake Bacon.

By CHLOE has two locations in Boston. One is in Seaport at 107 Seaport Boulevard Boston, Massachusetts 02210, and the other in Fenway, at 100 Van Ness Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02215.

2. Whole Heart Provisions

If you are looking for a small spot to eat in or grab take-out, check out Whole Heat Provisions. The menu consists of veggie bowls, that you can either order from the menu, or build your own! Feel free to try the Kaya Bowl, which consists of red cabbage slaw, basil, green beans, currants, roasted broccoli, pickled jalapeño, coconut curry, tahini, and peanut crumble — yum! There is also the Mission Bowl, which is filled with shiitake, edamame, shaved brussels sprouts, japanese eggplant, smashed cucumber, szechaun dukkah, and a creamy tahini dressing.  If you feel like making your own bowl, try making this Nourishing Power Bowl With Lemon Tahini Dressing.

3. My Thai Vegan Cafe

Do you have a love for Thai food? My Thai Vegan Cafe is so satisfy cravings! They offer lunch and dinner and have a variety of specialty options on the menu, like an Avocado Medley with Yellow Curry, String Beans and Tofu, Fresh Mango and Yellow Curry, and Crisp Noodles Plus. You could also try one of the delicious appetizers — you can’t go wrong with the Golden Wontons or Fried Dumplings! If you have the desire to cook up your own Thai food, try out this recipe for Thai Coconut Curry Soup With Spicy Sesame.

4. Veggie Galaxy

Veggie Galaxy is a vegetarian restaurant serving up breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with plenty of vegan options available on the menu! For breakfast try ordering the Avocado Toast with Seitan Sausage and Shiiake Bacon Bits. For lunch you could try the popular Club sandwhich, which consists of tempeh bacon, smoked tofu, tomato, lettuce, red onion, basil pesto, and garlic mayo. For dinner, there is always the Shepherd’s Pie or Seitan Cutlet of the Week! You could always try making this Cauliflower Club Sandwich With Waffle Bread at home if you can’t make it to the restaurant!

5. Cocobeet

If you are in the mood for a refreshing juice or smoothie, be sure to hit up Cocobeet. All juice and smoothies on the menu are organic, raw, and fresh, and will be sure to have you feeling revitalized! If you like juices, try ordering the Green Genes, which has kale, spinach, cucumber, celery, apple, parsley, lemon, and ginger. Or you could order the Peruvian Sun which is loaded with orange, carrot, lemon, apple, lime, and maca! If you are looking for a smoothie, there is always the Blue Coconut Smoothie, or the Banana Chia Smoothie! Try making this Green Superfood Detox Smoothie!

6. Cuong’s Vegan Sandwiches

A trip to Boston is never complete without trying out Cuong’s Vegan Sandwiches! The menu is filled with a variety of different items, like the deep fried tofu with a toasted french roll, the massaman curry, Thai mango salad, crispy fried spring rolls, and more! To satisfy your sweet tooth, try ordering the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, or the lemon frosted poppy seed cake for dessert. You could also try making these Avocado and Veggie Spring Rolls.

7. FoMu

Love plant-based ice cream? Make a pit-stop at FoMu — an all-vegan ice cream joint in the Boston area. They offer ice creams like chocolate pudding, cookies and cream, and salted caramel. You could also try an ice cream cookie sandwich, which consists of two soft cookie with ice cream in the center — a dream! If you’d rather have a bakery treat, FoMu comes through! Try out the double chocolate chip brownies, or the magic bars! If you feel like making your own tasty treat, try out this recipe for Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream!

8. Grasshopper

Grasshopper is a plant-based restaurant serving up some of the best plant-based Chinese food in the Boston area. The menu consists of items such as buckwheat noodles with tofu, lomein noodles, seitan stir-fry with American broccoli, sweet and sour tofu, and so much more! For dessert, you can try the blueberry or strawberry cheesecake, or a soy shake! You could always try making this Chinese Orange Cauliflower.

9. True Bistro

True Bistro Boston/WGBH Craving Boston

If you are looking for a nice restaurant to sit down, relax, and enjoy some whole-foods, plant-based fare, try out True Bistro. The menu consists of items like sweet potato ravioli, roasted heirloom winter squash, roasted cauliflower croquette, Thai red curry, tempeh skewers, and much more! They even have brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM. If you can’t make it to Boston, try out this recipe for Sticky Miso Grilled Veggie Skewers!

10. V02 Vegan Cafe

V02 Vegan Cafe is a plant-based eatery located inside a yoga studio! They serve breakfast all-day long, so feel free to order the tofu breakfast sandwich or a breakfast burrito whenever you like. The menu also has items like taco salad, grilled cheese, nachos, veggie burgers, chuna melt, a BLT, and more! If you want something fruity, try a smoothie, like the Green Bliss or Spicy Monkey. Try making your own Gooey Grilled Cheese Sandwich!

11. Life Alive Urban Oasis and Organic Cafe

Life Alive is a plant-based, organic cafe located in the Boston area, serving food designed to help keep you energized and satisfied. The menu consists of warm grain bowls, salad bowls, grilled wraps, juices, and smoothies. Try the Tofu Peanut Satay Salad Bowl, which has cucumbers, carrots, radish, greens, sesame ginger vinaigrette, spicy peanut sauce, marinated tofu, and sweet and spicy sprouted seeds. You can also try making this Tofu Satay With Peanut Sauce.

12. Walnut Grille

Walnut Grille is located just west of Boston, and is a vegetarian restaurant with plenty of vegan options available! The menu includes a variety of different soups, salad, sandwiches, burgers, and more! Try ordering the Cajun Seitan Sandwich, which has Cajun crusted seitan, green leaf, grilled onions, swiss cheese, tomato, vegan remoulade, all on a whole wheat bread. Make sure you specify you would like this vegan upon ordering. You could always try out this recipe for Crispy Sweet Potato Sandwiches.

13. The Red Lentil

The Red Lentil is a vegetarian restaurant located just outside of Boston, and is serving up delicious brunch, lunch, and dinner. Menu items include grand nachos, Jamaican jerk tempeh, rustic paella, macrobiotic bowl, nutty lasagna, Mexican pizza, and more! If you cant make it on a Saturday or Sunday between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM for brunch, try the tofu scramble or vegan waffle. If you can’t make it to the Red Lentil, try out this recipe for Mexican Refried Bean Pizza.

14. All Star Pizza Bar

If you are in the mood for pizza, look no further than All Star Pizza Bar, a pizza joint with an abundance of vegan options on the menu. Plant-eaters can try the Baked and Tofused Pizza, which has sun-dried tomato sauce, daiya mozzarella, citrus-balsamic baked tofu, roasted garlic, and fresh basil. Sweet-n-Sassy is also a popular choice, and is topped with almond milk béchamel, daiya cheddar, pickled red onion, kale, roasted butternut squash, and chili flake, and more! You could also try making this Margherita Pizza With Fresh Basil Pesto and Mozzarella.

15. Union Square Donuts

If you have a craving for something soft and sweet, check out Union Square Donuts. Although this is not an exclusively vegan doughnut shop, there are plenty of options on the menu. The vegan doughnuts options include cinnamon sugar, Belgian dark chocolate, and coconut masala. You could always try this simple recipe for Easy Baked Doughnuts.
