Usually when we hear the words “German Beer Hall”, we immediately begin thinking about delicious, cold draft beers — and a menu filled to the brim of meaty options.
From sausages to pretzels dipped in beer cheese, beer halls aren’t the most diet-friendly option for anyone following a plant-based diet — until now. The Bierkeller Entertainment Complex, a live music, dinner, and beer hall in England, is launching a vegan version of its most famous dish — the Bavarian sausage.
The new sausage is made out of wheat protein which is then smoked in order to lend it that classic, intense, and smoky flavor of a traditional German sausage. According to Adam Van Hecke, the man who oversees menu development for Bierkeller Entertainment Complexes across England, fans are already responding enthusiastically to the plant-based dog.
“A lot more people are vegan or vegetarian now, either through choice or health reasons, so we felt we needed to cater for what was an increasing crowd,” he told West Bridgford Wire. “We trialed the vegan wurst to start with then, after we realized there was a demand and people were really enjoying them, we decided to put them on our new menu. They’re not just bought from the UK, we get them from our traditional German bratwurst suppliers, so they have the same quality and authenticity but obviously, they’re meat-free and people seem to really love the flavor.”
