Let’s Check out London’s First Vegan Chinese Restaurant, Mao Chow!


Plant-based Chinese cuisine is hard to come by, and if you do, it’s not often authentic enough to satisfy that deep, deep craving. Earlier this year, the coveted Club Mexicana was replaced and London received its very first vegan Chinese restaurant called Mao Chow.

Mao Chow has a short but sweet menu, full of delicious options that will quickly make your mouth water upon viewing. They moved from their old location, to a quaint and slightly hidden spot in Hackney, where it was once a pop-up shop. Along with the move, they’ve introduced new vegan options to their already appetizing menu. Now, they have deviled eggs, sashimi, blood sausage and caviar – yes, all vegan.

Although the new options aren’t exactly traditional Chinese cuisine, guests are enthralled and excited nonetheless. They also have red-braised pork, a sweet egg tart, a cumin lamb flatbread, mung bean noodles with chili oil, and dumplings, all of which are miraculously vegan. The owner, Julian Denis uses watermelon to create the sashimi dish.

“We vacuum pack the watermelon to collapse the cells which adds a dense texture to the watermelon flesh,” Denis explained to Metro Uk.

One of the favorite items on their menu is the ‘egg’ crepe, stuffed with Xian spiced confit jackfruit, coriander, scallions, pickled chilies, and olives. Wow.

On Facebook, the reviews are plentiful and positive. Simon said, “Excellent! Vegan food with imagination. Some real highlights on the menu.” And Lucy Black said, “Fabulous! Some of the best vegan food I’ve ever eaten!”

I really don\'t understand what you mean in this article. I moved to London 21 years ago and there were vegan Chinese restaurants. Since then there have also been chains, actually vegan restaurants (especially cheap vegan restaurants) are exclusively Chinese. For example we often go to eat at the Loving Hut in Edgware (at the end of the Northern Line underground) which took the place of another Chinese vegan restaurant and which has recently changed again becoming Zen Buddha: https://www.zen-buddha.co.uk/. I remember a Chinese vegan restaurant in posh Belsize 21 years ago and another even posher in Knightsbridge at the same epoch. Well, they are everywhere. I really don\'t understand, unless you want to advertise a specific restaurant, but in that case don\'t say that it is the first vegan Chinese restaurant. It\'s much more difficult to find non-Chinese vegan restaurants! Weird.
