This weekend from Friday, September 14th to Sunday, September 16th, Berkeley Heights located in New Jersey will hold its vegan festival! Sponsored by the Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission, the event will include free offerings like yoga, Tai Chi, a vegan cook-off, and educational panels for everyone in the community regardless of their current diet.
This Vegan Fest is an attempt by the BHEC to raise awareness of the importance of a plant-based diet to your personal health, as well as the preservation of our environment. The event also hopes to instill, on those who attend, the value of mindful exercise and making informed food choices.
On the first day of Vegan Fest, Yoga and Tai Chi sessions will take place in Grove Park at the Connell Center starting at 6 pm. This sunset workout will include an hour of yoga taught by certified instructor, LeeAnn Gerrato, and will finish with a Tai Chi session as the sun sets taught by Don Madson. Please bring either a beach towel or yoga mat, along with a canister of water!
The second day of Vegan Fest, Saturday, September 15th, will entail a Health Focus Panel beginning at 10 am at Town Hall on Park Avenue. The panel will discuss how fitness can improve your overall lifestyle and health, and how eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help contribute to that. Guest speakers will include wellness experts from the YMCA, an oncology nutritionist, and a professor of Agriculture, Food, and Resource Economics of Rutgers University.
On the final day of the event, an exciting, vegan cook-off will take place at Lower Columbia Park at 1 pm. The cook-off will have three parts: appetizer, main course, and desserts, and winners will be chosen in each category. The food prepared must be 100% vegan. Winners will receive prizes like a deep tissue massage, manicures, Whole Foods Market giftcards, and free yoga mats!
