About Simply Bar: The Simply Bar is a small Canadian company that was founded in 2002. The founder, Cathy Richards, set out to create a bar that was both filling and easy to digest; high in protein and low in fat; low glycemic with a handful of natural ingredients. The result?

Each bar has 16 grams of protein, 2-4 grams of fat, under 3 grams of sugar, at least 4 grams of fiber, and 160 calories or less. They are also considered a good source of iron. The Simply Bar is a natural protein bar with more fiber than sugar!

The bars are sweetened with organic brown rice syrup, rate low on the glycemic index, and contain no refined sugars. Each flavor contains 10 ingredients or less – and they are all things you can pronounce! All bars are certified vegan, gluten-free, and kosher.

The One Green Planet Verdict: In terms of ingredients and nutrition it’s hard to beat these bars. A natural protein bar with more fiber than sugar? Pretty amazing! And packing 16 grams of protein into a 150 calorie bar is also quite a feat. But the real question…how do they taste?

Well, we loved them! Overall, the texture is pleasantly crunchy, like a less sticky version of a crispy rice bar. The Cinnamon Pecan and Lemon Coconut flavors were definitely our favorites. But all the flavors were true to their names, and they all tasted very natural.

With a clean list of ingredients, a significant dose of protein, and low sugar content, these bars were in fact quite satisfying as well as easy to digest. They proved to be a great option before or after a workout, as an on-the-go snack, or with some fruit or a smoothie for breakfast. Highly recommended!

Light and full of protein

May 24, 2012 by Laurie

I really like these, especially because they are light enough to not weigh you down before a workout, loaded with protein, and taste great, too! They do soften considerably in the heat, which makes them not as tasty texture-wise, but the flavor is still there.

Workout Replenishing Bar

May 19, 2012 by Ray

Simply Bar = Simply Protein! This bar is fabulous for delivering lots of protein to build muscles and sustain my energy! I've never heard of these bars but definitely will be getting some more as they are a great snack treat after my workout routine and don't ruin my diet!

Quite Simply, Lovely

May 16, 2012 by Kaleigh Wyrick

The simply bar is a lovely addition to the options available for vegan AND gluten free bar snacks. The crispy texture provides a nice chewy experience, and the sweetness is so light that it doesn't have that sickly-sweet that other bars have. The level of sweet combined with the flavors of each bar combine quite nicely to give the sensation of infusing your entire mouth with its essence.

Cinnamon was my favorite, just because I am a die-hard lover of cinnamon, but the others were tasty as well, and satisfying, both in the eating experience and in the satiety that followed. I liked how you bite into the puffy yet thick bar, and as you chew the crispy texture melts on your tongue. It isn't the texture you go for if you are looking for the chewy "raw" texture of fruit and nut bars, so just keep that in mind.

The only reason I don't give them 5/5 stars is because the ingredients include "soy protein isolate" and "natural flavors," which, don't sound completely "all natural" to someone looking for whole, unprocessed foods, but for what the product is -- a simple, filling, and tasty vegan snack that includes organic ingredients -- it is an excellent choice.

Protein Punch

  1. When I buy energy bars, I look for bars that have a significant amount of protein but aren’t made with more than 10 ingredients. It’s also really important that I can pronounce all of the ingredients- if you can’t pronounce it, why eat it?

Has to have chocolate in it… well, ok, I can live with it if it at least has coconut OR chocolate.
I like to feel some texture, not sugary sweet like most of the mainstream “granola” bars. I prefer as many as possible of the ingredients to be raw if possible – e.g. do oats really need to be fried, baked or whatever to be good? NO!
I like most of the sweet to be from bits of fruit… oh and a little spice is good – cinnamon, cayenne are favourites!

My energy bar has to be organic, vegan, have a nice variety of tastes and textures, and stay fresh even after a long day on the trail in the hot summer sun. Calories don’t bother me since me and my energy bar are out there burning them up. Trans fat? No way! Keep the fat down and the carbs & protein up, then I’m a happy camper.

  4. avatar karen says:

    crunch, protein, vegan, taste

  5. avatar Riley W. says:

    Real food ingredients and protein!

  6. avatar Shayne Camantigue says:

All natural ingredients, complex carbohydrates, essential vitamin and minerals. I love VEGA products and bars that have a combination of hemp, brown rice, and pea protein. Sweeetners such as agave nectar that doesn’t spike your insulin is also a criteria. None of that refined, processed flours or sugars. Oats is also a good binder as well as flax seeds. Superfoods are also a great source to incorporate into energy bars. A good bar is healthy for you and will able to sustain your energy. You want to fuel your body with the right type of foods.

  7. Vegan and Kosher without white sugar is what I am always trying to find in a bar. Nice to know of a product that is high in protein and low in sugar! The cocoa coffee is at top of my list.

  8. avatar Lindsay says:

Vegan, ingredients I can actually pronounce, low sugar

  9. avatar kaylaclough says:

REAL ingredients. The fewer, the better. Nuts, fruit… a little dark chocolate doesn’t hurt!

  10. avatar kdubb says:

  11. avatar Lizz says:

I look for high protein, low sugar, natural ingredients & great taste!

  12. I look for a lack of junk, specifically high fructose corn syrup. And, of course, no animal by-products whatsoever.

  13. avatar Megan Merchant says:

I want my energy bar to be an experience. One that forces me to press pause and connect with the present moment, experience the taste, the texture, the flavor & the art of eating. Each bite should be a mindful meditation, one that- once it’s complete, invites me into a more enlivened and present state of being !

  14. avatar Cody says:

Vegan ingredients, tons of protein, low sugar, and a great taste!

  15. avatar Josh says:

I look for vegan ingredients, great amount of protein, low sugar, and a great taste!
