Book Review: Finding Ultra by Rich Roll

Rich Roll

About the Book: Finding Ultra is Rich Roll’s incredible-but-true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever.

Finding Ultra recounts Rich’s remarkable journey to the starting line of the elite Ultraman competition, which pits the world’s fittest humans against each other in a 320-mile ordeal of swimming, biking, and running.

But Finding Ultra is much more than an edge-of-the-seat look at a series of jaw-dropping athletic feats—and much more than a practical training manual for those who would attempt a similar transformation. This book is most notable as a powerful testament to human resiliency, for as we learn early on, Rich’s childhood posed numerous physical and social challenges, and his early adulthood featured a fierce battle with alcoholism.

Ultimately, Finding Ultra challenges all of us to rethink what we’re capable of and urges us, implicitly and explicitly, to “go for it.”

About the Author: Rich Roll has been featured on CNN and has been named “one of the world’s 25 fittest men” by Men’s Fitness magazine. He is a graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and four children and, when he isn’t training or competing, manages the entertainment boutique Independent Law Group, LLP. More information about Rich Roll can be found at richroll.com.

The One Green Planet Verdict: Finding Ultra is an extremely well-written and a very engaging read.

Rich Roll provides a candid account of his childhood and early adulthood, including his struggles with social situations, athletics, and alcoholism. He describes his accomplishments, including his incredible midlife transformation, with unexpected humility and humor. In spite of Rich’s incredible journey, the book’s message is, refreshingly, much more “look at what’s possible” than “look at me.”

A hybrid of biography, how-to, and reference guide, this book is informative, interesting and inspiring. Finding Ultra will make you believe that almost anything is possible, if you’re willing to put in the effort and challenge yourself. A highly recommended read for anyone keen on learning more about the truly life-transforming powers of healthy diet and exercise.

As someone that has struggled with his health most of his adult life, I have begun running, and will shortly begin training for my first Ironman. Most people I talk to say that this type of training and competition cannot be done living a plant-based lifestyle. This book will provide even more motivation and inspiration for me as I continue this awesome and life changing!

Winning "Finding Ultra" will help me make running my first marathon at 56 the beginning of a remarkable story of perseverance and strength. It will encourage me to share my story with others so they can make the kinds of choices that will help them live active and healthy lives.

I've always been inspired by autobiographies and am attracted to the life-transforming and story and messages of this book. I want this book for myself and for my son. We will together explore the journey and use it to inform our thoughts and choices. Information is power; the story of human accomplishment is even more powerful than just information. So the book for us will be power squared!

I'm 31, we will be adding another child to our family. Rich's story is an inspiration, because I find myself in a similar situation. A former collegiate athlete, overweight, working too many hours, desiring to get back on the road to health and well being. Having dabbled in veganism, this book will help me go for a final switch over from the standard american diet, and get me back on the path to fitness.

Watching my mother lose the ability to walk has really inspired me to become a workout enthusiast. I've always wanted to take part in a competitive running event however, I'm a bit apprehensive since in high school I was voted "most athletically inept." This embarrassing title is something I don't express readily but I feel this book would be of such great value for me to conquer my fears of being involved in a form of an athletic competition. I have the willpower to workout almost everyday. I just need the drive, knowledge and inspiration that this book will give me. My goal is to also use my knowledge from this book to help inspire my mother to workout again which could potentially benefit her to not need a life threatening knee surgery. My mother was so supportive after I came home from high school ready to take my own life after being ridiculed for my lack of athletic abilities, that I owe it to her to inspire her to work out once again.

Winning this book might be the final inspiration I nee to "go for it". I've always been a go getter, however I had a rough childhood being obese, and was told by my parents when I wanted to join sports teams that I couldnt because I wasn't good enough. When I got to high school amd college, I adopted new healthy lifestyle changes, and also allowed no one to get in my way. I moved out and went to Hawaii for college at the age of 17, became a dolphin trainer (My lifelon dream) at the age of 19, and found the love of my life. In the past few years, I've come across some challenging obstacles, and unfortunately, I've allowed myself excuses and become my own obstacle. I have only starte running in the past two years, and I am finishing the triple crown of half marathons in august, and I would like to try to get close to a 2 Hour time- I've been an average 2:30-2:40 so far. Also. My second marathon ever is coming in December, and as excited as I am for it, and for how badly I want a certain time, I come up with the most excuses to not train in the winter months. I am a very impressionable person, and reading quotes and books that inspire always help me in my daily, and competitive life. I would love to read this book, as well as try to teach myself to go for more than just average.

Not being a meat eater in todays society means no strength. Winning Finding Ultra by Rich Roll will not only teach me as an athlete a thing or two about finding inner strength but also show that it does not matter the condition, person, or diet any person can "go for it" and reveal their true aptitude for what they love.

I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. This book, and the knowledge of pushing oneself by Rich Roll, may help push me beyond my current. It may help me realize a new energy, and may just help keep me moving in the right direction.

This is exactly the type of book I want to get for my husband, to help him "go for," or fully commit to veganism! If an ultra athlete can do it, certainly he can too!

I am a vegan runner. I've wanted to try triathlons but have not been able to push myself to do so, hopefully this could give me the push I need. I also want to share the book with my dad who needs motivation to start being healthier.
