If you’re an animal lover, we probably don’t need to tell you all the gory details about the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China. In short, the festival is held every year to mark the summer solstice, in which thousands of dogs and cats are brutally bludgeoned to death and sold for their meat.

At its height, the Yulin Festival was said to be responsible for 10,000 to 15,000 slaughtered dogs. In 2014 that figure was reported as dropping to 2,000 to 3,000. Reliable sources put last year’s numbers under 1,000. Given the attention that this horrific festival has been given from activists and celebrities alike, it wouldn’t be far off to suggest that changing public opinion is behind this decline.

But now there is finally good news for the millions of animal lovers worldwide that have been tirelessly fighting to stop the festival for years…

According to a press release from Humane Society International, the Yulin government is set to prohibit restaurants, street vendors, and market traders from selling dog meat at the event. This is a huge milestone for animals!

The ban is believed to have been initiated by Mr. Mo Gong Ming, Yulin’s new Party Secretary and the ban will come into effect on the June 15, 2017 – just one week prior to the festival start date on June 21st. The ban will be strictly enforced with fines up to 100,000 yuan and risk of arrest for violations.

Peter Li, the China Policy specialist at Humane Society International, said in a statement: “The Yulin dog meat festival is not over just yet, but if this news is true as we hope, it is a really big nail in the coffin for a gruesome event that has come to symbolize China’s crime-fuelled dog meat trade…. As opposition to this trade has grown within China and across the world, much focus has been placed on the Yulin festival and so it is significant politically that the authorities are taking the outrage to curb this cruelty seriously.”

Now animal rights organizations are urging Yulin authorities to make the ban permanent and are also making public service announcements warning against transporting dogs for the meat trade and are working towards building a government facility to house confiscated animals.

With one petition having 11 million signatures being handing to the Yulin government on behalf of Humane Society International, Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project, RaiseUrPaw, Care2 and Avaaz, it’s clear that this blatant cruelty will no longer be accepted and the Yulin Dog Meat Festival will soon come to end completely. Share this positive news with all the animal lovers you know!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news.....Unfortunately, this is not true :/
"There is national coverage by many publications indicating that the Yulin Dog Meat Festival is over. That is not true. We have information coming directly from those associated with the government indicating the opposite.
.
If and when the Yulin Dog Meat Festival does end, it will not be the effort of one person. Nor will it be the effort of a single group. It will be because the people have spoken. Because they have flooded the Chinese government and media with images and messages on how the treatment of these dogs make them feel.
.
There are figures and groups claiming they were the ones to end it, asking for donations to reward their work. Please do not let exaggerations of the truth steer you from the fight. This is when your voice is needed most.
.
Tomorrow in different states across America, there will be a national protest outside Chinese Embassies condemning those involved with the festival. Make your voice heard. Let your presence be known.
.
Just when the front was supposed to unite. Just when the people started to stand because they were angry. The groups you would expect to speak out against injustice, said it was over.
.
The day that the law is changed. The day that during the festival no more dogs are tortured. That is when celebrate. That is when we write we were victorious.

Don\'t want to disappoint anyone and I really hope it\'s true, but China has the reputation (well known among Asian countries) to say one thing and do another. They have the tendency to placate growing protests by saying something that sound agreeable for a short period of time, before it goes back to square one when attention were shifted elsewhere.

The last time the authorities said something was in 2015 if i\'m not wrong. The Yulin, Guangxi authorities said they have nothing to do with the festival, be it organizing it or encouraging it. They also gave the impression that it has ended by declaring the festival will not happen. Instead, the festival went on and from the investigation report from animal rescue groups, the authority actually warned the meat sellers to be ready for the protesters from all over the world to descend on the city as the festival\'s date approaches. It was the year where the vendors were captured on photos that were widespread and still in use whereby they were taunting animal lovers by grabbing the dogs\' neck with tools and rise them high up in the air.

I believe it was the warning from the authorities that resulted in such coordinated tactics from the vendors to mentally abuse the animal lovers/protestors, plus the sudden shift of the meat sellers to slaughter the animals during the night time behind closed doors instead in the open which was their usual procedure.
