According to a new study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, swapping out meat with mushrooms in just one meal per day can help you lose weight, reduce overall body fat and maintain a leaner body over time.
The researchers recruited 73 adults, mostly women in their 40s, who ate approximately one cup of mushrooms per day in place of meat.
At the end of the one-year trial, researchers found that participants who substituted mushrooms for meat lost seven pounds, showed improvements in body composition compared to participants on the standard diet, and maintained the weight loss.
Mushrooms are nutrient-dense and offer a variety of health benefits, besides weight loss; they are known to improve heart health, have anti-cancer effects, enhance immunity, balance blood sugar levels, control high blood pressure, and treat nutritional deficiencies.
