If there’s one thing native New Yorkers are proud of, it’s pizza. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any born-and-raised New Yorker who doesn’t argue that the city has the best pizza in the world, let alone the entire United States. That’s just the way it is — call it part of that New York charm. And after all, New York City was the birthplace of pizza in the United States. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of taking a bite of a cheesy brick oven pizza with a crust so thin, you need to fold it in half order to eat it, then you understand.
That being said, no matter where you live, pizza is a beloved food. We look forward to nights in with friends spent with a pizza pie, drinks, and movies. That’s why we understand that if you’re trying to cut back on dairy, pizza can be a tough thing to give up. Cheeseless pizza just isn’t for everyone. Well, luckily, vegan cheese has taken major strides in years. Thanks to companies that make vegan cheese shreds, like Daiya and Follow Your Heart, more pizzerias are starting to carry vegan slices. And thanks to innovative food bloggers, you can even make your own cashew mozzarella that melts and stretches just like the real thing.
While we love that pizzerias are recognizing that there’s a growing demand from the dairy-free crowd, they’ll often offer just a plain cheese slice — not that there’s anything wrong with the classics. But sometimes, you want a little something extra on your pizza. And one Brooklyn-based pizzeria is feeding that demand.
Screamers Pizzeria, the lovechild between Philadelphia’s Blackbird Pizzeria and Brooklyn’s monolithic vegan hotspot Champs Diner, opened in summer 2016.
…And they’ve been the pizzeria of our dreams ever since.Seriously, just check out that crust bubble. Absolute food porn.
If we get a slice of this mushroom pizza, we’ll never ask for anything else in life.
…And they also do plain cheese slices. You’ve gotta respect the classics.
We also feel that we should mention that Screamer’s makes vegan versions of classic New York pizzeria staples like seitan-stuffed calzones, pizza pockets, zeppoles, and cannolis. Follow Screamer’s Pizzeria on Instagram for more cheesy pizza porn.
And if you love pizza or just food in general, check out the Food Monster App (available for both iPhone and Android), where you can try all kinds of vegan pizza recipes (from New York style to Chicago deep dish)! The days of “but what about cheese?!” are over. Go ahead – indulge!
