Oh, HuffPo, you’ve got it all wrong when it comes to vegan cheese!
Recently, the news website published an article titled “Taste Test: Friends Don’t Let Friends Eat Vegan Cheese,” in which the editors concluded that “vegan cheese is a crime no one should commit.” Well, considering the way the editors went about this, we can see how they would come to this conclusion. They made a crucial mistake: choosing mostly store-bought, processed vegan cheese products. From Tofutti to Daiya, the editors tried them and disliked them one after one.
In fact, truly good vegan cheese is really not about “imitating” the taste of dairy cheese, but instead about re-thinking cheese completely. Just because a few big brands determine what a “cheese substitute” should look and taste like, doesn’t mean it will be appetizing. We challenge Huffington Post to think real, not “fake.” We’ve got some delicious, homemade nut cheese recipes here on One Green Planet. Try these below before writing off vegan cheese, HuffPo!
1. Vegan Moxarella
This homemade vegan moxarella cheese browns and stretches, making it perfect for pizza.
2. Vegan Macadamia Nut Brie En Croute
This takes much more effort than buying a fake cheese and slapping it on a sandwich, but hey, that’s why it’s called homemade, right?
3. Smoked Coconut Gouda
This versatile cheese melts fantastically and is made of healthy ingredients like coconut milk and nutritional yeast.
4. Vegan Cashew Cheese
Cashew cheese is amazing, and this one is a great substitute for cream cheese, without acting like it is cream cheese. It’s cashew cheese, not fake cheese — which is the whole point!
5. Smoky Pesto Cashew Cheese
When you slice this one, it may be hard to believe it’s not actually a real cheese. Using all real, natural ingredients makes all the difference.
6. Kick Ace Extra Sharp Vegan Cheddar Cheese Ball
Thanks to cashews, sun-dried tomatoes and nutritional yeast, this cheeseball is totally kick-ace and delicious.
7. Raw Vegan Cheese
Lastly, the HuffPost editors should try this simply, plain vegan cheese. Instead of loading this with a bunch of ingredients in a factory, you simply need macadamia nuts, water, lime juice and a dash of pink himalayan salt.
We bet if the Huffington Post editors had given these truly real vegan cheeses a try, they would be singing a whole new plant-based tune!
