Zookeepers in Toronto, while “fascinated” by the male African penguins who appear to be a couple, plan to separate and pair them with females for breeding. African penguins are endangered and the move is part of an effort to help the species.
Buddy and Pedro (the gay penguin couple) have not only been inseparable (they socialize together in the day and pair off together at night), but they’ve also shown signs of traditional mating behaviors. The penguins were bred in captivity and came to Toronto from zoos in the U.S. in May and formed a connection.
According to LiveScience.com homosexuality has been documented in more than 450 species of vertebrates signaling that sexual preference is biologically determined in animals.
