MTV was launched in 1981 and quickly became a cult favorite of hip music-loving young adults everywhere. The music videos featured on the channel helped develop the artful rebellious youth culture of the 80s and 90s, and because of its ability to influence young people, MTV has often been under fire for airing programs that could negatively affect and corrupt the youth. (Those who were around in the 90s will remember the huge outcry from worried parents over music stars like the outspoken Eminem or MTV shows depicting reckless behavior like Jackass.) However, the crude words of Eminem do not compare to the egregious acts committed by one of MTV’s reality show participants.
The channel used to be primarily based around music videos, but in recent years, they have turned their focus to reality shows which are aimed more toward an even younger teenage and pre-teen audience – which makes this latest display of animal abuse even more disturbing.
One of the characters from their reality show, Siesta Key, is seen dangling an endangered hammerhead shark from the side of the boat in a video. The individual, Alex Kompothecras, then proceeds to shoot the innocent animal twice and kill him, all while laughing maliciously. According to a petition on Care2, he also posed in a photo with a dead hammerhead on MTV’s Facebook page.
Although Kompothecras’ fifteen seconds of pseudo-fame will almost certainly fade out in the blink of an eye, a petition has been set up to get MTV to drop this cruel individual from all programming on the channel. As an influencer of youth, it is MTV’s moral responsibility to make sure people, especially young people who are still forming their personal beliefs and ideologies, know that killing endangered species is a vile criminal act that will not be tolerated.
If you agree that this reprehensible individual should be dropped from all programming and that viewers should be told why, please take a moment to sign the petition. And please share this with your network to bring attention to this horrific story and increase public disapproval of Kompothecras.
