When someone says something mean about you, it’s pretty easy to feel downtrodden and defeated. What’s harder to do is to take that experience and turn it into something amazing.
That’s exactly what Dannie “Dee” McMillan, a high schooler in Lampasas, Texas, did when somebody in her class created a fake twitter account calling her a “fat whale.” On her GoFundMe page, she wrote, “I was recently a victim of cyberbullying. Someone at my school made a fake Twitter profile with the username fatwhaledee. They put their name as ‘Dee’s a fat whale.’ They took my powerlifting sports team picture and photo shopped a whale over my face. After making the page they started following people from my school, with each follow another person was notified of this page.”
Dee said she felt shame and embarrassment after learning about the page. She left school right away, locked herself in her room, and cried for hours. But with the help of her sister, friends, and plus-size model Laura Lee, Dee said she decided “to embrace it and turn this horrifying thing into something beautiful.”
She created a t-shirt that says, “Dee the Fat Whale Saves the Whales.” All money raised will be donated to Save the Whales, an organization that works to protect endangered whales such as the Vaquita, educate the public about whale conservation and protection, and campaign against orca captivity.
Dee’s resilience is truly inspiring. “I can help make a difference in the oceans I can also set an example for other victims of bullying. I can take someone’s hate and use it to spread love. Overcoming things like this is not easy but people need to know that it is possible and they have support.”
