With the help of Sea Shepherd Switzerland and the Swiss Cetacean Society, Deputy Isabelle Chevalley of Switzerland has managed to ban the import of dolphins into the country.
Earlier this month, Chevalley provided members of parliament with a briefing document. On March 13, following the briefing, the deputy successfully carried her motion with 112 votes for and 60 against.
The Council of States enforced the import ban, but rejected a ban on dolphin captivity. Sea Shepherd and the Swiss Cetacean Society have expressed concern about the fate of three dolphins still in captivity at the Connyland dolphinarium.
As previously reported by One Green Planet, Connyland has already been implicated for a number of dolphin deaths. Eight Swiss dolphins in captivity have died in less than three years.
Connyland is scheduled to reopen on March 31, resuming shows featuring the three dolphins remaining in captivity.
