It seems like more and more, there is evidence that the world is shifting toward a plant-based diet and lifestyle. Even brands synonymous with meat and dairy, like White Castle and McDonald’s, have recognized that the future of food is plant-based and have introduced vegan options at a number of their restaurants. Although Starbucks‘ primary specialties are coffee and beverages, they also carry a number of quick meal and snack options. In the past, their vegan options were primarily only fruit and dairy-free beverages, but they have now introduced a new vegan protein bowl!
The Vegan Lentils and Vegetables Protein Bowl with Brown Rice has a hearty 23 grams of protein and is jam-packed with fresh veggies and grains. It has more than one cup of vegetables, including butternut squash, roasted tomatoes, beets, broccoli, and peas. It is topped with sunflower seeds and served with a lemon-tahini dressing.
Considering the demand for protein in the U.S. is not set to decline anytime soon – after all, the average American consumes around twice the amount of protein they actually need daily – if we hope to be able to sustain a growing population without completely decimating the planet’s land and freshwater stores, we need to look beyond animal agriculture to meet our protein fix. Starbucks’ choice to create a plant-based lunch option that is not only packed with whole food ingredients but is also high in protein is a great move to make plant-based protein options more available to consumers.
With nearly 30 percent of Americans choosing to leave meat off the menu more frequently and around 40 percent of people choosing to eat plant-based when they eat out, this new bowl certainly meets that need!
